Categories of Satanic Rituals: A Discussion Prompt

In our diverse Satanic Brotherhood, rituals may be deeply personal or communally shared, erotic or ascetic, playful or deadly serious. I'm offering the following as categories of types of ritual practice to help foster a discussion on what different of us do when we talk about "doing rituals".

Share how you view or use these different categories of rituals: what do you like or not like, which one really speaks to you, etc. Also share if you would change or add a category or practice.

1. The Erotic Ritual

• Purpose: Transmutation of sexual energy into will, communion, or individuation.

• Common forms: Masturbatory rites, sex magick, Dom/sub polarity work, body worship, tantric inversion.

• Tools: Body, breath, blood, semen, mirrors, restraints.

• Question: Where is the line between indulgence and liberation?

2. The Shadow Working

• Purpose: Confrontation and integration of disowned aspects of the self (rage, shame, powerlessness, pride).

• Common forms: Journaling, mirror work, embodiment of despised archetypes, confession rituals.

• Tools: Symbols of trauma or guilt, fire, darkness, graveyard dirt, thorns.

• Question: What happens when the internalized persecutor becomes a god?

3. The Liturgical Rite

• Purpose: Structured invocation of infernal powers or principles for worship, empowerment, or alignment.

• Common forms: Group rituals, formal readings, litanies, oaths, scripted invocations.

• Tools: Candles, altars, vestments, sigils, ritual texts.

• Question: Is Satanic liturgy devotional, theatrical, or transformative—or all three?

4. The Banishing / Severing Rite

• Purpose: Release of toxic people, beliefs, or internalized institutions (e.g., church / mosque, family shame, old self).

• Common forms: Cutting cords, burning names, grave rites, ritual disowning.

• Tools: Knives, rope, paper, fire, scissors, salt.

• Question: Can or should release exist with or without vengeance / anger? 

5. The Rite of Becoming

• Purpose: Rebirth, individuation, or claiming one’s full identity as gay and/or as Satanic, or as a Sovereign Soul / God-Self.

• Common forms: Naming ceremonies, mirror rites, initiatory challenges, symbolic death and resurrection.

• Tools: Masks, robes, names, blindfolds, primal elements (earth, fire, water, air).

• Question: What part of you must die so another may rise?

6. The Daily / Devotional Practice

• Purpose: Ongoing attunement to one's chosen current practice or devotion to our Unholy Father, Satan

• Common forms: Morning invocations, journaling, altar offerings, self-discipline regimens.

• Tools: Incense, icons, prayer beads, affirmations, calendars.

• Question: What does Satanism look like between rituals for you?

7. The Satirical / Subversive Rite

• Purpose: Dismantling oppressive paradigms through mockery, blasphemy, or irreverence.

• Common forms: perverting 'traditional' catholic liturgy or other abrahamic worship (example: the Black Mass), "blasphemous" art.

• Tools: Repurposed or desecrating sacred texts, pictures, or objects, (EX:  wearing a priest collar / shirt and fucking, re-doing sacred pictures – Jesus getting fucked), irony.

• Question: Are we mocking or liberating—or both?

Discussion Questions:

• Which categories do you actively use or resonate with?

• Are any of these meaningless or off-base for you?

• What rituals do you perform that don’t fit neatly into any of these?

• What would a uniquely M4M Satanic rite look like to you?
